LISBON, Portugal's capital,
will leave you with an everlasting impression of great natural beauty. Built on seven hills the city overlooks
the legendary Tagus River. Some of Lisbon's museums and monuments are quite unique. You will learn about the fascinating
history of Portugal dating back to the 12th century and the first King of Portugal, Afonso Henriques. Alfama, the
oldest section of Lisbon, is built on the highest of the seven hills, and survived the earthquake of 1755, which
destroyed most of the city. Alfama's labyrinth of cobbled streets is virtually unchanged since the 12th century.
Crowning Alfama is the Castle of St. George, the oldest monument in Lisbon. |
