What to see outside Lisbon.
A must is a visit to the Royal Palace of Queluz the former summer residence of the Royal Family, which has been described as
Portugal's Versailles and onto Sintra with its narrow roads, its climbing flowers and semi tropical vine-like plants trailing
from mossy walls and balconies offers breathtaking views all around, where old palaces and noble old houses can
be admired.The ancient town of Sintra where well known English poets and writers lived in the 18th and 19th centuries, amongst
them Lord Byron, William Beckford and Francis Cook, in the main square you will find the National Royal Palace in existence since
1154, distinguished by its conical twin kitchen chimneys with a mixture of architectural styles combining Gothic,
Mudejar, Manueline and Renaissance works, with superb 15th and 16th century hand painted wall tiles in the chapel
and main halls. Stop at Cabo da Roca (Cape of the Rock) is the Westernmost point of Continental Europe and Cascais fishing village with
its lovely bay and gaily painted boats and the resort town of Estoril, famous for its high society of exiled European nobility and well known Casino
Estoril. |

Or drive North through the bull-breeding region of Vila Franca to Obidos, the medieval little
town with its colorful houses completely surrounded by the city walls. The town is a collection of narrow streets
winding their way between whitewashed houses adorned with blossoming bougainvillea and Alcobaça to visit the Monastery,
the first gothic monument, even if the facade was later changed to baroque. It is a spectacular Monastery with
marvelous halls and cloisters, a strange kitchen with enormous chimneys and a fountain where two streams flow into
one another and the famous Batalha Abbey, a Gothic Monastery from the 14th century. Visit Fatima to see the Shrine, where on May 13th, 1917 three little shepherds had the first
vision of the virgin Mary, which was repeated five times during the successive months. Or visit the famous Museum town of Evora to see the University,
the Temple of Diana, the Church of St. Francisco and the Chapel of Bones.
Explore Estremoz with its narrow streets and white houses, walk around the walls, which once defended
the town from Castile and the Moors. |
